Study Tips

Sometimes studying is easier for some than others, or even those who study well may feel like they are in a scholarly slump at some point. There are several different things and methods that can help you become better at studying. Here are a few tips to try:

  1. Sometimes, it seems that when studying, you should study for long periods of time all at once. It’s okay to take breaks! Try studying for an hour or so, and then go outside and breathe some fresh air or enjoy a nice workout. Then, return to your studying, and you will feel more focused and motivated.

  2. In between breaks, set goals. It is more effective and efficient to set a lot of small goals, rather than one large goal. Being able to see yourself check off those goals will make you feel like you are getting more stuff accomplished. There are apps that were invented, such as Tomatodo, to help you identify your goals. Tomatodo also has a timer to set in order to work a certain amount of time, and then take a break.

  3. Be sure to make one of your goals to complete a practice test. It’s easy and convenient to test yourself. Make your own tests and complete them as though you’re really in a testing environment. This will help you feel more comfortable when you have the real exam in front of you.

  4. Another important studying habit is to find a reliable study partner. You should find a person who is serious about studying, and isn’t there to just chat and be a distraction. This person should also feel very seriously about their grades, and wants to do the best possible. Finding that person will help to keep you motivated.

  5. College students seem to be very good at procrastinating and staying up all night the night before a test. Don’t pull an “all-nighter”. Getting an adequate amount of sleep is very important when it comes to learning. A good night’s sleep will help your brain rest and refocus.

  6. Last, but not least, stay positive! It is always very important to remind yourself that you are doing a good job and that you can accomplish anything if you try your hardest.

After you study hard and well, it’s important to reward yourself for a job well done! Treat yourself to your favorite lunch or go buy something small that you’ve been wanting. Maybe even eat a cupcake or two! Happy studying!
